Doctor and Patient Portrayal

Work With Your Doctor to Manage Your Risk of Stroke

It’s important to keep an ongoing relationship with your doctor to help lower your risk of a subsequent stroke.

As a patient who has experienced a TIA (transient ischemic attack or “mini-stroke”) or stroke due to a blood clot, you have an increased risk for having a subsequent stroke. So it’s important to keep an ongoing relationship with your doctor to help stay on top of your treatment goals.

By working with your doctor, you can help manage your risks through lifestyle adjustments and, if necessary, medical treatment. It’s important to follow your doctor’s advice, including taking medications like AGGRENOX as prescribed.

Your doctor may also suggest:

  • Testing for medical conditions that can increase your risk of a subsequent stroke due to a blood clot.
  • Managing your blood pressure through dietary means—such as reducing your salt intake and eating more fruits and vegetables—as well as supervised exercise and medication if needed.
  • Managing your cholesterol through dietary means—such as eating less egg yolk and red meat—as well as exercise, weight loss, and medication if needed.
  • Working to limit your alcohol consumption to within recommended daily limits: one drink a day for nonpregnant women, two drinks a day for men. (A drink is 12 ounces of beer, 5 ounces of wine, or 1.5 ounces of 80-proof whiskey.)
  • Weight management through diet, exercise, and medical treatment if necessary.
  • Management of diabetes through diet, exercise, weight management, and medication if needed.
