Managing Risk Factors

Are you at risk for a stroke?

There are a number of factors that increase your risk of TIA/stroke. Some can be treated with medicine or managed by lifestyle changes you and your doctor can discuss. These controllable risk factors include:

Controllable Risk Factors High Blood Pressure Heart Disease High Cholesterol Cigarette Smoking Alcohol Abuse Obesity/Physical Inactivity Diabetes

Other risk factors are beyond your control. These uncontrollable risk factors include:

Uncontrollable Risk Factors: Age, Gender, Race, Heredity, Ethnicity, Prior stroke, TIA, or heart attack

Taking an active role in understanding and managing these risks and consistently following your doctor's advice are the best ways of preventing a disabling stroke.

HOW TO LOWER YOUR RISK:

See your doctor for regular checkups. Your doctor can pinpoint your risk factors and identify the right treatments and lifestyle changes to help reduce your risk of a recurrent TIA or stroke.
